Ingredients

  • 1 (12.8 oz) box Chocolate Chex® cereal
  • ½ cup (100g) firmly packed light brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup (67g) granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup (32g) Dutch processed or unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 8 oz (227g) dark or semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • ⅔ cup (126g) chocolate sprinkles (optional)
  • ¼ cup (30g) powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Pour the cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
  3. Melt the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth.
  4. Pour the melted chocolate over the cereal and gently stir with a spatula until fully coated.
  5. Transfer the coated cereal to a large zip-top bag or lidded container.
  6. Add the sprinkles and shake until evenly dispersed.
  7. Add the sugar-cocoa mix and shake thoroughly to coat.
  8. Add the powdered sugar and shake one last time until evenly coated.
  9. Spread the muddy buddies on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • Use semi-sweet chocolate if dark chocolate is too intense, but avoid milk chocolate.
  • If Chocolate Chex isn’t available, use Rice Chex and add cocoa to the chocolate coating.
  • Sprinkles stick better when added immediately after coating with chocolate.
  • Recipe can be doubled or tripled for parties or holiday gifting.
  • For a gluten-free version, ensure all ingredients are certified gluten-free.
