Hot Cross Buns are soft, spiced yeast buns filled with dried fruits and topped with a signature cross, perfect for Easter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup raisins or currants

Instructions

  1. Warm milk and activate yeast.
  2. Mix dry ingredients.
  3. Add wet ingredients to form dough.
  4. Knead dough until smooth.
  5. Let rise for 1–2 hours.
  6. Shape into buns.
  7. Allow second rise.
  8. Pipe cross and bake at 375°F for 20–25 minutes.
  9. Glaze and serve.
