  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Cream 1/2 cup butter with granulated sugar until light and smooth.
  3. Mix in flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Press dough evenly into the prepared pan.
  5. Bake crust for 12–15 minutes until lightly set.
  6. In a bowl, whisk remaining butter with brown sugar until smooth.
  7. Add eggs one at a time, mixing gently.
  8. Stir in corn syrup, vanilla, and salt.
  9. Fold in nuts or raisins if using.
  10. Pour filling evenly over pre-baked crust.
  11. Bake for 30–35 minutes until edges are set and center slightly jiggles.
  12. Cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

  • Do not overbake to keep the filling gooey.
  • Let squares cool fully before cutting for clean slices.
  • Maple syrup adds deeper flavor if substituted for corn syrup.
  • Store layered with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
