Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 medium apples (650g), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon maple extract (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 13×9 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, toss apple slices with maple syrup, maple extract (if using), cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and flour until evenly coated.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  5. Add cold, cubed butter and cut it into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter or your hands until crumbly.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  7. Bake at 375°F for 10 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350°F and bake for an additional 33–35 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool for 20 minutes before serving.
  9. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel drizzle.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor balance.
  • Letting the crisp cool helps the filling set and prevents sogginess.
  • Use real maple syrup (Grade A Dark Amber) for richer flavor.
  • You can freeze before or after baking for up to 3 months.
  • Old-fashioned oats yield the best crisp texture; quick oats may overbrown.
