Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Dough:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the Cherry Filling:
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cherries (pitted)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Cinnamon Layer:
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cherry filling by combining cherries, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Cook until cherries release juices. Stir in cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water and cook until thickened (5–7 minutes). Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, and let cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over top and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  4. Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.
  7. Roll dough into a 16×12-inch rectangle. Spread softened butter over surface, then sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon evenly.
  8. Spread cooled cherry filling evenly over the cinnamon layer.
  9. Roll dough tightly from the long side into a log. Cut into 12 equal rolls.
  10. Place rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  11. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 22–28 minutes until lightly golden.
  12. Cool slightly before adding frosting or glaze if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure milk is warm but not hot to properly activate yeast.
  • Let cherry filling cool completely before spreading to prevent soggy dough.
  • Avoid overbaking to keep rolls soft and fluffy.
  • Roll dough tightly to maintain defined swirls.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
