Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds ribeye steak (or sirloin or shaved beef)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth (low sodium if preferred)
  • 1 ounce packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 2 green bell peppers, sliced
  • 6 hoagie/sub rolls
  • 15 ounce jar Cheez Whiz (or cheese of choice)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat for about 3 minutes.
  2. Season ribeye steak with salt and pepper.
  3. Sear steak on both sides for 3–5 minutes until golden brown. Remove and slice against the grain.
  4. In the crockpot, combine beef broth, au jus mix, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir well.
  5. Add sliced steak, onions, and bell peppers into the crockpot.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or high for 3–4 hours, stirring occasionally if possible.
  7. Toast hoagie rolls if desired, then layer with steak mixture and top with melted Cheez Whiz or preferred cheese.

Notes

  • Searing the meat adds extra flavor but can be skipped to save time.
  • Use provolone, mozzarella, or homemade cheese sauce as alternatives to Cheez Whiz.
  • To keep sandwiches from getting soggy, toast the rolls before adding the filling.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
