Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (21 oz each) apple pie filling
  • 1½ tablespoons lemon juice (fresh is best)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or ½ tsp cinnamon + ½ tsp nutmeg)
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) butter cake mix (yellow or vanilla works too)
  • 8 tablespoons salted butter, sliced into 16 pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Add apple pie filling, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and apple pie spice directly into the baking dish. Stir to combine.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly across the bottom of the dish.
  4. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over the apple filling.
  5. Gently press the cake mix down into the apples (do not mix).
  6. Top with slices of butter evenly spaced across the surface.
  7. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly. Check at 25 minutes and press any dry mix into the filling if needed.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
  • To reheat, microwave individual servings for 30 seconds or warm in the oven at 350°F for 10–15 minutes.
  • You can substitute fresh apples for the canned filling—just cook them with sugar and spice first.
  • Try variations with cherry, peach, or berry pie fillings.
  • Gluten-free or dairy-free substitutions work with compatible cake mixes and butter alternatives.
