Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Peel the onion and trim the bottom slightly so it sits flat.
  3. Cut a deep cross on top of the onion, stopping before cutting all the way through.
  4. Place the onion on a sheet of aluminum foil.
  5. Insert butter into the cuts and sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika.
  6. Wrap the onion tightly in foil, sealing it completely.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the onion is tender.
  8. Carefully unwrap, garnish if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Sweet onions can be used for a milder flavor.
  • Seal the foil tightly to trap steam and prevent dryness.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste or add Cajun spice for heat.
  • Can be cooked in an air fryer or on the grill using indirect heat.
