Notes

  1. Cabbage Prep: For the crunchiest coleslaw, slice your cabbage as thinly as possible. A mandoline slicer can be your best friend here, ensuring uniform thinness that a knife might not achieve.
  2. Dressing Balance: The secret to a memorable coleslaw is in the dressing. Adjust the mayo, vinegar, and sugar ratios according to your taste. Remember, it’s easier to add more than to fix a dressing that’s too strong.
  3. Seasoning: Don’t underestimate the power of seasoning. Salt not only enhances flavor but also helps draw moisture from the cabbage, softening it slightly without losing crunch. Add salt gradually and taste as you go.
  4. Resting Time: Allowing your coleslaw to chill in the fridge for at least an hour before serving is crucial. This resting period lets the flavors meld and the cabbage to soak up the dressing, deepening the overall taste.
  5. Freshness Factor: Freshly made coleslaw is best served the same day. However, if you’re pressed for time, preparing it a few hours before the meal can also work wonders.
  6. Creative Add-Ins: Don’t be afraid to mix in additional ingredients for texture and flavor. Apples, raisins, or even nuts can add a delightful twist to your coleslaw.
  7. Mayo Substitutes: For a lighter version, you can substitute part of the mayo with yogurt or sour cream. This swap can add a new dimension of flavor while cutting down on calories.
  8. Taste Test: Always do a final taste test after the coleslaw has had time to chill. The flavors can change slightly as it sits, so adjust seasoning if necessary right before serving.
